One of the most famous portraitists of his day, Sargent was in Philadelphia in the spring of 1903. Based in London, Sargent had come to the United States to work on murals for the Boston Public Library, and to paint portraits. His image of his Philadelphia hostess Letitia Brown White, the wife of Dr. J. William White, was one of his most vivacious portraits from this trip. When asked by Mrs. White what Philadelphia artists he would like to meet, Sargent answered "There's Eakins, for instance." Mrs. White replied, "And who is Eakins?"
